STEMSEAS expeditions are ship-based, 6-10 day exploratory experiences primarily for undergraduates from diverse backgrounds aboard NSF-funded research vessels. Students sail with experienced faculty mentors and engage in geoscience and oceanography activities (while also having fun)! A-STEP Fellows aboard these expeditions will integrate with the group while having slightly different, science communication responsibilities. Applications for these cruises can be submitted through the STEMSEAS application portal by February 6, 2022.
School of Rock, a 10 day professional development workshop primarily aimed at K-12 educators and pre-service teachers, was held virtually in 2020-21. We hope to return on board the JOIDES Resolution scientific ocean drill ship in fall 2022 if it’s available during transits or tie-ups. A-STEP Fellows participating in School of Rock work together with educators to create and share IODP learning materials. A-STEP Fellows are especially key in our efforts to better serve underrepresented audiences and the general public in understanding Earth, ocean, and climate science.
